The new Chief Justice of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has taken the oath

Bertan Özerdağ, the new Chief Justice of the TRNC, officially assumed office by taking the oath. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Ersin Tatar, the President of Northern Cyprus, Sarper Altıncık, the Chief Prosecutor of the country, Supreme Court judges, and representatives from the presidential administration.

Addressing the ceremony, the President emphasized that the TRNC is a modern state with its own institutions, democracy, legislation, and executive power. He underscored the vital role of independent judicial authority and the supremacy of the rule of law.

Highlighting the importance of addressing issues and shortcomings to ensure the timely delivery of justice, Ersin Tatar stressed that this would foster greater trust in the authorities and enhance the state's reputation internationally.

Expressing gratitude to the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Narin Ferdi Şefik, the President wished success to the new Chief, Bertan Özerdağ, expressing confidence in his ability to fulfill his duties effectively.

In his remarks, Bertan Özerdağ affirmed that the Supreme Court and the High Judicial Council are committed to improving the judicial system and earning the trust of the public.

Following his address, Bertan Özerdağ took the oath as the new Chief Justice of the TRNC and commenced his duties.

Bertan Özerdağ was born on May 24, 1974, in Nicosia. He graduated from Nicosia Turkish Maarif College in 1992 and the Faculty of Law at Marmara University in 1996. He obtained a master's degree in European Union law and international trade from the University of Essex, England, between 1998 and 1999.

He completed his legal internship and was registered as a lawyer on October 5, 2000. From 2000 to 2006, he practiced law. He was appointed as a district court judge on June 1, 2006, senior district court judge on October 1, 2010, district court president on September 16, 2014, and Supreme Court judge on November 16, 2015.
