Dangerous Vibrio bacteria detected on Turkish beaches, capable of entering through open wounds and causing serious infections

Experts from the ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) have detected dangerous Vibrio bacteria (including Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus) on beaches in Antalya, as well as in the Aegean and Marmara Seas. In hot weather and low salinity, these microorganisms multiply rapidly.

Infection risks

For people with open wounds. Vibrio vulnificus can cause necrotizing fasciitis when entering through cuts.

Swallowing seawater may expose one to Vibrio cholerae, potentially causing diarrhea and dehydration similar to cholera — although such cases in Turkey are rare.

Infection can also occur through seafood. Consuming raw oysters can lead to poisoning with symptoms such as vomiting, cramps, and fever. In weakened individuals, the infection may develop into sepsis.

Particularly vulnerable — women and children.

Women who remain in a wet swimsuit for too long risk urinary tract infections — humidity and warmth promote the growth of bacteria such as E. coli.

Young children: doctors advise against sea bathing before 4 months of age and pool bathing before 6 months. Swimming is strictly forbidden in cases of poisoning, diarrhea, or open wounds.

How to protect yourself:

— Shower immediately after swimming, especially if you have wounds.

— Do not stay in a wet swimsuit — change immediately after swimming.

— Treat and cover cuts and abrasions with waterproof dressings.

— Avoid raw or undercooked seafood, especially oysters.

— Children with symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, or open wounds should not swim in the sea or in pools!
