General strike underway in Northern Cyprus — security measures tightened
In Northern Cyprus, trade unions have declared a general strike and protest actions against changes to the cost-of-living compensation system.
Protesters began gathering in the morning to organize a march to the parliament building. Authorities tightened security measures in advance: police forces from various regions have been deployed to the area, barriers have been set up, and firefighting equipment has been prepared.
Police were instructed not to allow protesters to pass through the established barricades.
The actions are taking place against a backdrop of tension following the last demonstration, when police used pepper gas and fire trucks used water cannons to disperse protesters. Several vehicles, including a fire engine, were also damaged at that time.
Unions state they intend to continue the protests, demanding a reversal of the government's decision.
