Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in Underground Concrete Channel in Kyrenia

Kyrenia is dealing with the aftermath of heavy rain. According to the Department of Meteorology, the region received 16 kilograms of rain per square meter in the last 24 hours.

The report states that the highest amount of rainfall was recorded in Kyrenia, with 16 kilograms per square meter. Boğaz saw 15 kg/m², Karaoğlanoğlu had 14 kg/m², Nicosia received 2 kg/m², and Alsancak and Gemikonağı each recorded 1 kg/m². Other areas that experienced rainfall reported less than 1 kg per square meter.

In Kyrenia, the heavy rainfall led to flooding in an underground concrete channel that begins in the school district and runs along Atatürk Street.

Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul shared a video on social media showing the efforts to clear the blockage.

According to the mayor, broken branches from the storm and large stones were washed into the channel, causing a blockage near the Ordu Pazarı market.

"Even though our city has infrastructure deficiencies that struggle to manage floodwater, the stones shown in the video caused yesterday's issues at the bazaar," the mayor wrote.
