Drone Football launched for children in Northern Cyprus for the first time

In Northern Cyprus, children were introduced for the first time to Drone Football — a new high-tech sport that is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. As reported by the Mayor of the Gönyeli–Alayköy Municipality, Hüseyin Amcaoğlu, thanks to the municipality’s initiative this format was presented to children on the island for the first time.
According to the mayor, the project is being implemented within the framework of Cyprus Robofest and the international Enjoy AI Drone Cup tournament, the hosting of which on the island has become an important step in the development of technological education.
Amcaoğlu noted that the project is viewed not as a one-time activity, but as an educational process that helps children develop thinking skills, creativity, and teamwork abilities.
In cooperation with the Masterkids organization, the municipality:
- provided schools in the region with Drone Football equipment,
- created special spaces for team-based work,
- launched practical training sessions for teachers and students.
After the completion of the training phase, tournaments are planned to be held in a festive atmosphere, where children will be able to apply the skills they have acquired in practice.
In the competitions organized with the support of the municipality, 18 teams from educational institutions in the region will participate:
- Gönyeli İlkokulu — 5 teams
- Alayköy İlkokulu — 5 teams
- Dr. Suat Günsel İlkokulu — 5 teams
- Gönyeli SAM — 3 teams
The mayor emphasized that Drone Football is not only an introduction to technology. According to him, this format helps children develop:
- problem-solving skills,
- hand–eye coordination,
- strategic thinking,
- teamwork,
- self-confidence.
Amcaoğlu highlighted the importance of introducing children to technology correctly and consciously at an early age, stressing that the municipality will continue to create spaces where children can dream, create, and confidently move forward.
“Under the auspices of Cyprus Robofest, we are laying the foundations of a generation that grows together with technology,” the mayor stated.
