Residents of Cyprus warned against illegal tree felling

The Department of Forestry of the Republic of Cyprus reminded the public that cutting down trees for use in Easter bonfires is illegal and punishable by law.

According to the agency's statement, written permission from the department is required for the felling of trees and ornamental plants, regardless of their location. It is emphasized that permits for tree felling for bonfires will not be issued.

Under the law, illegal tree felling is punishable by a fine of up to 5000 euros and/or imprisonment for up to one year.

The department urged local authorities, organized groups, and the public to immediately report any cases of tree felling to local forestry departments or the police.

Regarding the upcoming Easter celebrations, the department called for special caution due to higher than usual temperatures and reminded the public that permits from the mining authority and police are required for the purchase and use of fireworks.

It should be noted that lighting fires in rural areas is prohibited, except for cooking in designated areas for picnics and camping.

Setting fire to forests and within 2 km of their boundaries is a punishable offense, punishable by imprisonment for up to ten years and/or a fine of up to 50,000 euros.

In case of smoke or fire detection in or near the forest, immediate reporting should be made to the nearest forestry station or by calling 1407 or 112.
