The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative will visit Cyprus at the end of January

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuéllar, will arrive on the island after January 27th. This was announced over the weekend by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Christodoulies.

The leader of the Greek Cypriots stated that the Colombian diplomat has already initiated contacts regarding the Cyprus issue. In particular, she held a meeting with Cyprus's Permanent Representative in New York.

"The meeting was very productive; she is ready to start working, and I believe this will help us in our efforts to resume negotiations," stated Nicos Anastasiades.

According to the Greek leader, Maria Angela Holguin Cuéllar will visit Cyprus after January 27th and then make working visits to the guarantor countries. It is expected that the diplomat will travel to Athens, Brussels, and other capitals.

Nicos Anastasiades also reported that "Brussels conveyed to Nicosia that the EU is ready to make a significant contribution at all stages of the negotiation process."

Recall that it was previously reported that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres officially appointed his personal representative in Cyprus. As expected, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Maria Angela Holguin Cuéllar, assumed her duties on January 1st.
