President of Cyprus Met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres
On Monday, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. The Greek Cypriot leader reiterated his readiness to participate in a trilateral meeting to resolve the Cyprus issue at any time.
"We had a very constructive discussion. We explored the prospects of resuming negotiations, and I expressed my gratitude to the Secretary-General for his political commitment, not only to restarting the talks but also to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the agreed framework," Christodoulides said after the meeting at the UN headquarters in New York.
He also noted that the UN chief has been working on this matter for some time and expressed hope that these efforts will bear fruit.
"I am ready to meet with the Turkish Cypriot leader and the Turkish delegation whenever and wherever the Secretary-General deems appropriate," the president emphasized.
Christodoulides added that António Guterres thanked Cyprus for its role in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza via the Amalthea corridor.
Today, the Cypriot president is expected to meet with the U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor. The discussions will focus on bilateral relations, the Cyprus issue, and U.S. interest in the Great Sea Interconnector project.
As a reminder, the UN Secretary-General's meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar is scheduled for Saturday, September 28.
