The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, has ordered the pardon of an elderly man who fired a shotgun and injured a burglar. Earlier, the 82-year-old grandfather had been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

According to local media reports, the head of state is in direct contact with the Legal Service to expedite the necessary procedures.

The incident in question occurred on June 11, 2023. A 67-year-old man attempted to steal power cables from the home of the elderly man. He had disconnected the electricity before the theft.

As soon as the 82-year-old man noticed the burglar, he fired the shotgun to scare him off. A pellet hit the burglar in the back. Immediately afterward, the 82-year-old man called the police. It is noted that this was not the first time the robber had broken into his home.

Despite mitigating factors and the accused's age, the court sentenced him to two and a half years in prison. The 82-year-old man was also charged with attempted murder, for which he was acquitted.
