The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus have implemented a license plate recognition system at all checkpoints. According to statements from Cypriot-Greek officials, this is necessary to check the involvement of drivers in various unlawful activities.

According to the Philenews publication, the system is installed at all checkpoints controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, where vehicles cross the border to the northern part of the island.

The system automatically records and recognizes vehicle license plates, determining whether the car is associated with any criminal activity. It also checks whether the registered owner of the vehicle has any legal issues, including identifying unpaid fines and arrest warrants.

In addition, as part of the police's use of 'smart' technologies, the police have installed an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system in 147 police cars.

Also, a GPS system has been installed on 588 police vehicles and 123 fire brigade vehicles, allowing for the automatic determination of the location of police vehicles for better coordination of law enforcement activities.
