The Republic of Cyprus Police has issued a warning about a new type of telephone fraud. Scammers make video calls via WhatsApp and impersonate law enforcement officers.

According to the announcement, fraudsters use the WhatsApp messaging app to invite unsuspecting users to a video call, pretending to communicate with them on behalf of the police.

During the conversation, which usually takes place in English, the fake police officers ask citizens to provide their personal information and share details about their bank cards.

The police emphasize that such phone calls are fraudulent and have no connection to the actual police. The public is urged to be especially cautious, not to answer calls from scammers, and, under no circumstances, follow their instructions or click on links and QR codes they send.

If bank details are disclosed during such a call, citizens are strongly advised to immediately report it to their bank to prevent the fraudulent use of personal information for criminal purposes.
