A 32-year-old man has been arrested in Cyprus on suspicion of causing the large fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in Anogyra. The Limassol Court has remanded the suspect for six days.

According to the police press office, the suspect was arrested after witness testimonies implicated him. His car was seen in the area where the fire started.

The fire in Anogyra, near Limassol, burned approximately 1.5 square kilometers of dry grass. The Forestry Department reported that firefighting efforts continued throughout the night. Twelve aircraft were involved, along with 150 ground personnel, 20 fire trucks, 10 excavators, and three water tankers. Aerial firefighting efforts resumed this morning.

Members of local community councils, the police, the National Guard, the EAC, and volunteer groups also participated in extinguishing the fire.

Previously, it was reported that another fire had broken out in the same area. The fire in Trimiklini started after two minors, aged 12 and 13, launched fireworks. Witness testimonies confirmed this, and the teenagers have admitted their guilt in the presence of their parents.

The Forestry Department stated that fire brigades remain in the area to handle any potential flare-ups.
