Unknown persons robbed a chapel in Avgorou during Holy Week
Residents of Avgorou village are outraged by a theft that occurred in a chapel during Holy Week.
Unknown persons broke into the chapel of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, located on the grounds of the memorial dedicated to Modestos Panteli, the first fallen member of the EOKA liberation struggle. Two oil lamps and a candle holder where believers lit candles were stolen from the church.
According to local residents, the theft was discovered by a person who regularly visits the chapel to keep the oil lamps burning.
The last time he was there was on the evening of Holy Thursday, and everything was in its place. The perpetrators cut the ropes from which the lamps hung, causing the chapel floor to be covered in oil.
The police and local authorities have already been notified of the incident, and an investigation is underway.
