Over the past week, there has been a noticeable surge in coronavirus cases among the elderly in Cyprus, as reported by Haralambos Charilaou, a representative of the Okypy hospital operator, on Thursday.

Speaking to the state broadcaster CyBC, the medic stated that currently, there are 56 patients in state institutions, mostly of older age. Five patients are on ventilators in the intensive care unit, and another five are in the enhanced care unit.

According to the doctor, the most concerning situation has arisen in Nicosia, where the majority of hospitalizations involve elderly individuals from nursing homes. "In most cases, we are talking about people over 80 who have not received revaccination," explained Haralambos Charilaou.

The Okypy representative also added that visits to nursing homes should be accompanied by a PCR test conducted within 72 hours. The use of protective masks for visitors is mandatory.

It is worth noting that earlier reports indicated an expected increase in coronavirus cases in Cyprus ahead of the holidays. The country recently introduced a new Covid-19 vaccine.
