Cyprus Reports Acute Blood Donor Shortage
Authorities in the Republic of Cyprus have issued an urgent call for donors to visit blood donation centers. The demand for blood donations in the country has reached a record high.
Andri Panayiotou, Head of the Blood Center, explained on the Alpha Kalimera show that the need for blood has sharply risen following several unfortunate incidents which significantly depleted stocks of blood types O and B. The situation is exacerbated by Covid-19, which has affected several regular donors.
According to Panayiotou, prospective donors must first ensure they are in good health.
The blood donation station in Nicosia is situated at the Engomi Medical Center and operates from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM. In Limassol, donations can be made at the Agios Georgios area in Havouza from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM. The station at Larnaca hospital also operates until 8:00 PM. In Paphos, donors are welcome at the Elizium Hotel.
"We require approximately 300-350 units of blood per day across Cyprus. This translates to about 350 donors per day. This reserve is crucial in case of emergencies where a significant amount of blood is needed," stated Andri Panayiotou.
