Authorities in the Republic of Cyprus have announced new rules and recommendations regarding the use of surveillance cameras in gyms. These are designed to protect visitors' privacy.

The inspections aimed to assess the legality of installing and operating surveillance systems in gyms, focusing on respecting the rights of clients and employees.

According to the new recommendations, the use of surveillance systems should be strictly limited to “ensuring the security of premises, without unjustified intrusion into people's private lives.”

Surveillance is permitted in specific areas such as gym entrances and exits, gym-managed parking lots, around the gym's perimeter, and at reception, with particular attention to the cash register.

Surveillance is not allowed in areas where recording could infringe upon individuals' privacy, such as workout zones, sports areas, kitchens, toilets, changing rooms, and offices.

The announcement specifies that audio recording is strictly prohibited under any circumstances, as it would constitute excessive intrusion into people's private lives.

Access to audiovisual materials must be strictly limited to monitors or computers within the gym premises, accessible only to the manager or other authorized personnel. Access from personal devices or on a permanent basis is not permitted.
