The Ministry of Health of Cyprus has officially announced the introduction of preventive measures in connection with cases of meningococcal group B infection (MenB) recorded in the UK. This refers to an outbreak among students in the Canterbury area, where a cluster of cases was identified at the University of Kent, mainly among those living in dormitories and in close social contact.

British health authorities responded promptly to the situation by launching chemoprophylaxis protocols and a vaccination campaign against meningitis B. Particular attention was paid to informing students and recommending strict adherence to the instructions of medical services.

How is the vaccination of students in Cyprus being carried out in connection with the outbreak in Britain?

Vaccination on the island is provided free of charge for all students associated with the University of Kent, upon presentation of a student ID or enrollment document. Given the high mobility of young people between the Republic of Cyprus and the UK, Cypriot authorities decided to implement similar protective measures at the national level.

Specifically, students — both those planning to study and those who have already returned to Cyprus — are offered immunization to minimize risks. Vaccinations are available by appointment at public health facilities across the country, covering the following regions:

  • Nicosia;
  • Limassol;
  • Larnaca;
  • Paphos;
  • Famagusta region.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that timely prevention is a key measure for protecting public health and preventing the spread of infection among students in the Republic of Cyprus.
