Colony of protected Egyptian fruit bats returns to Mavrokolimbos Dam

A colony of protected Egyptian fruit bats has begun returning to the area of Mavrokolimbos Dam after the completion of repair works and the restoration of water levels in the reservoir.
Previously, the animals were forced to leave the area when the tunnel serving as their natural shelter dried out due to damage to the dam. According to specialists, the colony of about 800 individuals left their habitat in time, sensing the threat.
Experts note that Egyptian fruit bats are highly adaptable: they regularly change shelters and can quickly respond to hazardous conditions. The use of special detectors confirmed that no animal was trapped at the time of the accident — the bats had left the tunnel before it was flooded with water and silt.
After the completion of the dam repairs and tunnel cleaning, the environment became suitable for habitation again. In recent days, specialists have already recorded the return of the animals to the restored shelter.
