Famagusta wants to disclose the names of major debtors: opinion of the Data Commissioner requested

The local authorities of Famagusta have contacted the Commissioner for Personal Data to clarify whether it is lawful to publish the names of people with large outstanding debts. The Regional Administrative Organization of Famagusta (FAMA) explains that the idea of a “debtor list” is linked to the desire to increase transparency and show residents the real state of revenue collection, but any steps must comply with the GDPR and Cypriot legislation.

The President of FAMA, Yiannis Karousos, urged residents with substantial debts to settle them as soon as possible, stressing that stable budget revenues allow services to operate without interruption and demonstrate respect for all taxpayers. At the same time, he is preparing a bill that will require all local authorities to publish lists of major debtors according to unified rules.

At present, the Association of Rural Communities of Famagusta is awaiting an official response from the Commissioner. After receiving the opinion, the authorities promise to act strictly within the legal framework to protect public interests and at the same time strengthen trust in their work.
