The main police department of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is increasing security measures in the country on the eve of the New Year holidays. Drivers have been warned about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding.

"Do not get behind the wheel in a state of alcohol intoxication. If necessary, ask for help from a relative who has not consumed alcohol, use taxi services, or call the police," the police statement advises.

The police also urged people to refrain from using mobile phones while driving, to use seat belts, and to use child car seats when transporting children.

"It is prohibited to transport children under 3 years of age in cars without a child car seat. Children with a height between 135 and 150 cm must sit in the back seat of the car and fasten their seatbelt. Children below 135 cm must fasten their seatbelt in a child car seat installed in the back seat," the memorandum states.

In addition, residents of the country were asked not to use firearms during New Year celebrations: its use is a crime, and incidents should be reported to the police.

The police also reminded residents of the country of the round-the-clock emergency phone numbers:

  • 155 Police and Ambulance
  • 156 Anti-Drug Department
  • 199 Fire Department
