Over the past weekend, a large accumulation of jellyfish was noticed at one of the beaches in the TRNC. Taking advantage of the good weather and the long weekend, residents of Northern Cyprus flocked to the sea to swim.

However, beach recreation in Yeniboğaziçi was overshadowed by a large accumulation of jellyfish. The newspaper “Cyprus Post” reports about the concern of vacationers regarding the invasion of marine inhabitants in swimming areas.

Recall that earlier in early April, the Ministry of Agriculture of the TRNC reported that dangerous nomadic jellyfish - Rhopilema Nomadica — have become more frequent in the sea off the coast of Northern Cyprus over the past 10 years.

It is reported that jellyfish can be encountered in the waters of the TRNC quite often, especially they are active from February to April.

The increase in the jellyfish population is a temporary phenomenon, which usually lasts from several hours to several days. It is mainly due to the direction of marine currents and favorable climatic conditions, such as increased temperature and elevated nutrient content.
