Muhtars of Famagusta named the main problems of the region: unemployment, lack of social housing and rural land issues
On August 25, 2025, muhtars from Famagusta districts told the newspaper Gündem Kıbrıs that the main problems of the region are high youth unemployment, a shortage of social apartments in the center, and issues related to the distribution and development of rural plots.
According to the muhtars of Kanbolat, Lala Mustafa Pasha, Mormenekşe, Anatolian district and other neighborhoods, many young people cannot find work and are forced to leave their villages and the country. Mormenekşe muhtar Saim Aytürk noted that university graduates are working for minimum wage, while rent and housing prices make independent living and starting a family impossible. Lala Mustafa Pasha muhtar Tuncay Yahyaoğlu pointed out the poor condition of the roads and traffic jams that make everyday life more difficult.

The muhtars also complained about frequent power outages, lack of information on rights to allocated rural plots, and unfulfilled promises regarding the construction of social housing — in one statement, the estimated cost of an affordable apartment was put at £100,000–140,000.
For the residents of Famagusta, this means continuing pressure on family budgets, limited opportunities in the labor market, and difficulties in accessing infrastructure services. The muhtars called on the authorities to launch employment programs, accelerate the construction of social housing, and complete work on electricity supply and the development of rural plots.
