The President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar, called the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russian oligarchs "unjust" and urged Russians to move their investments from the south to the north of Cyprus.

"As the Republic of Cyprus is a European state, there are certain blockades, serious actions, and measures that they unfairly impose on Russian citizens," said the head of Northern Cyprus in an interview with the Turkish news site 'Harici.'

Ersin Tatar also emphasized that Russians who crossed to Northern Cyprus to avoid sanctions imposed on their money in banks in the south actually crossed the border "because there is order in the north, and they respect it."

Ersin Tatar reminded that Russian oligarchs have kept their money in banks in the south of Cyprus for years, and former presidents of the Republic of Cyprus granted them citizenship, thereby increasing investments. However, after the U.S. invasion of Ukraine, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and many other countries began imposing various sanctions against Russia.

The leader of the Turkish Cypriots acknowledged that after examining the assets of some Russian oligarchs and people in power on the political stage, many of them had "black money."

It is worth noting that an investigation, Cyprus Confidential, conducted by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), revealed how Russian oligarchs laundered money in the south of Cyprus.

Also, recently, Ersin Tatar made a statement to the Russian news agency TASS, in which he addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin with a proposal to recognize the TRNC and invited Russians to Northern Cyprus.
