THE NUMBER OF INMATES IN PRISONS OF NORTHERN CYPRUS HAS EXCEEDED A THOUSAND
This was announced today during a demonstration in front of the Famagusta District Court by the president of the Union of Turkish Cypriot Public Servants (KTAMS), Güven Bengihan. About 600 of them are foreigners.
The head of KTAMS also noted that about 600 prisoners are from third countries, and the prisons have more inmates and detainees than they can accommodate.
Güven Bengihan emphasized that the number of crimes in the country is increasing every day, indicating that the country is facing significant security and social problems.
The union leader also pointed out the shortage of personnel, which is a common problem in the courts. In particular, in the Famagusta District Court, there are 5 vacancies, with only 4 applicants and only two passing the exam. A similar situation has arisen in other district courts.
Güven Bengihan stated that if steps are not taken to address the current problems, the Union of Turkish Cypriot Public Servants may exercise its right to strike and protest.
