Barber Shops in TRNC Switch to Euro Payments: Punishments Await

Men's barber shops in Northern Cyprus have decided to transition to accepting payments for their services in euros. The new pricing structure of TRNC barber shops has sparked criticism on social media.

Edgevit Sadeli, the president of the Hairdressers Association, announced on his social media page that barbers have opted to start accepting payments in the European currency "to navigate the economic crisis and keep pace with the times." This marks the first time such a practice has been adopted by barber shops in Northern Cyprus.

Under the new tariff system, a standard men's haircut is now priced at 10 euros, while beard trimming costs 5 euros. Hair washing, blow-drying, and styling with gel are priced at 7 euros for clients of barber shops. An individual groom's haircut, tailored to specific preferences, commands a hefty fee of 100 euros.

The issue of the new euro-based tariffs in barber shops has drawn attention from Olgun Amcaoglu, the Minister of Economy and Energy of TRNC. According to him, setting tariffs for men's hairdressing services in euros violates the law and contradicts a decree issued by the Council of Ministers in 2005.

"The decree mandates that selling prices must be indicated on labels and lists as 'Turkish Lira' or 'TL'," the minister explained.

Minister Amcaoglu further announced that, following discussions with the president of the Hairdressers Association, it has been decided that those who fail to comply with the law and regulations will face criminal penalties.
